This is a bit different, as its really just my theories on the “flash sideways” in light of this most recent episode:

Maybe the flash-sideways is showing us WHY people are choosing the sides they way they are. Showing us that under different circumstances, people would me making similar choices to what they are doing on the Island.

For example, given different circumstances, Sayid would still be a killer for Nadia’s sake.

Ben, given different circumstances would sacrifice his power for Alex (weird when she’s just a student at his school [Side note: Rousseau never crashed on the Island, and is still perfectly sane living in LA. Does anyone else want to see how she would have ended up as much as I do?], and not his adopted daughter). Which is a major shift from his choices on the Island, but justifies why he would want to try to do the right thing currently.

Kate, given different circumstances, would still follow Claire around wanting to take care of her and her baby (that one is a stretch, but she’s following the evil people around).

Jack, given different circumstances, would still want to be the best leader he can be.

Locke, if he wasn’t dead, would have lost faith (does that even count?).

From that point of view, maybe it makes sense? But it doesn’t change that these still aren’t our characters. The characters we know were shaped by the Island at every turn, these haven’t been.

I’d also like to point out that Ben was still shot and saved by the others, and people were told that he wouldn’t be the same after that. AltBen went through that experience, while evidence shows that BenPrime very likely DIDN’T (judging by normal time travel / alternate universe theories).

Of course, I’m just going by the “normal” “time travelers create an alternate timeline” idea, which the writers deny. But we’ve got TWO timelines, one where the Losties are displaced in time and set off the bomb, which apparently doesn’t happen in the Prime timeline because the Island is still there. However, there is still evidence that the Losties were displaced in time in the Prime timeline (ZombieLocke giving Richard the compass to give to RealLocke, the picture shown to Sun with the Losties in DHARMA, people referring to the “Incident”, and so on). I’m just thinking out loud here, so the contradictions are intentional. It’s very likely that both Bens forgot getting shot and were “changed forever” and “lost their innocence”, and maybe that’s part of what the AltLine is showing us. Maybe that Ben can overcome his badness without having to learn from his mistakes that he can’t take back…

Great ep. I agree with Dr3w’s purpose for the flash-sideway’s. I LOVED Jack and Richard vs the dynamite!
We did get confirmation that Richard came in on the Black Rock as a slave and that Jacob gave him a “gift.” On a long enough timeline I think we’d not see the Losties age either.

Yes, still getting confirmations on theories, but no real ANSWERS. Richard is immortal. Why does he need to be that way? He’s not a candidate, maybe they do age, and he’s just mortal until he finds a replacement for Jacob.

  2. is benprime the ben that teaches school if the plane landed safe? just clarifying the term. man, he doesn’t seem to hate his dad, nor his dad hate him – how weird is that?

i don’t think you’re going to get answers to the depth that you want drew. i don’t know why jacob wanted richard to be immortal, but it does appear that jack is too. that answered a huge question for me – everyone gets killed left and right and our dear losties keep going and going.

anyone else find it interesting that miles is still around? haven’t seen desmond in ages, dan (who i loved) got shot by his momma, and yet miles is still there, yet doesn’t seem to be key except for being the dharma guy’s son. do you think that could be significant or do you think they just haven’t figured out how to kill him off yet?

anyone else find it strange that sawyer is supposedly with the bad guys group but we haven’t seen him for two weeks?

kate knows she with the “bad guys” since she saw locke, i don’t think she’s okay with it, but i think her loyalty to aaron (coming out as loyalty to wacked out claire…i miss charlie) is going to keep her with them.

here comes widmore and where’s jin now? and so help me if i don’t get a jin and sun reunion soon and see sun playing a role that’s better than the meaningless lines they’re giving her now…well, i don’t know what i’ll do, but watch out. 😉

Okay, Ben saying “They’re the only ones who will have me”- totally made me cry.
Jack- gained badass points inside the Black Rock.
Llana- What can I say, chicks with guns= hot! Also, hoping there’s a back story shown soon on how Jacob was “the closest thing to a father” she ever had.
Hurley- quite possibly my favorite fictional character of all time!
Sawyer and Kate- I did not miss them at all!

Two days ago, this is where I was in the series, and I decided I wanted to catch up. Though last night’s episode was… different, there are some really amazing episodes (writing, acting, everything) between this and last nights.

I’m going to refrain from commenting on anything here out of fear of spoilers, but you should catch up. The next few renewed my faith in the series and actually made me really sad that they’re ending it, not continuing with the style that the series adopted for these few episodes.

And I just realized that you’re on track, and I’m two months off. /ignore me. Stupid months with the same first letter.
